Intoxication
A total of 5,175 lives were lost due to driver intoxication from alcohol, drugs, or medication. Intoxicated drivers accounted for 10.1% of all traffic fatalities.
Swerving
Swerving in and out of the driving lane caused 3,706 fatalities and made up 7.2% of all traffic fatalities.
Right-Of-Way Errors
The failure to yield the right of way caused 3,579 people to die. These deaths made up 7% of all traffic deaths.
Careless or Reckless Driving
At least 2,797 people died due to careless or reckless driving behaviors. These deaths made up 5.4% of all traffic fatalities.
Distracted Driving
Distracted drivers prompted 2,688 fatalities, which made up 5.2% of all traffic deaths.
Disobeying Traffic Rules
A total of 1,990 people died as a result of drivers failing to obey traffic signs, signals, or officers. These deaths amounted to 3.9% of all traffic fatalities.

While there are many more reasons why people are involved in traffic accidents, the aforementioned are the most common causes of collisions in the U.S.
